Dr Pierre de Villiers was born in Cape Town, South Africa. He completed his pre- and post-graduate medical studies at the University of Pretoria, respectively in 1979 and 1991. After practicing some 18 years as a well-respected orthopedic surgeon, he developed an interest in the diagnosing and management of difficult painful conditions.

In 2017, under the auspices of the World Institute of Pain (WIP), he successfully passed the internationally recognized FIPP examination (Fellow of Interventional Pain Practitioners), affording him certification to practice as a Pain Interventionist. He is also a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain and remains up to date with the latest developments in his field of expertise by regularly attending local and international courses and congresses.

Although about 80% of his time spent at the Hermanus Pain Clinic relates to the management of chronic pain, he also still serves the community of Hermanus and the Overberg as a general orthopaedic surgeon.

He lives in the sea-side town of Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa, with his wife, Elna.
